From Di Viles: The Club opened the track and field league season in fine style at Yate on Sunday in [...]

From Di Viles:

The Club opened the track and field league season in fine style at Yate on Sunday in the first Avon league match of the season.

With record numbers competing from all clubs, the Club finished third of the eight competing clubs behind North Somerset (1,231 points) and Yate (1,207) with 1,085 points. The U/13 boys won their age group.

I have included the number of competitors in each event in the results to show just how well many of our young athletes did.

There was also a fairly strong wind into the faces of the athletes which made the times slower than usual so graded performances were fewer than expected but it was a really good day all round.

The Club was given a tremendous start on the track in the sprint hurdles races with wins for George Adams in the U/13 boys 75m hurdles in 15.0, Livia Gauntlett in the U/15 girls 75 m hurdles in 11.8, a1-2 in the U/15 boys 80m hurdles for Nikko Hunt (13.3) and Charlie Fraser (14.7) and another 1-2 in the U/17 womens hurdles for Emily Dixon (12.4) just edging out Sophie Hay (12.5) in the 80m hurdles.

These performances are a tribute to Colin Barross who has worked extremely hard to make hurdles one of the club’s success stories in recent years.

Jake Burkey had an excellent days competition with wins in the U/13 boys 200m in 29.1, the long jump with 4m68 and a second place in the discus with 13m48.

Likewise Emily Dixon, in addition to her win in the hurdles, won the javelin with 26m68 and was third in the 300m, her first run at the distance, in 43.7.

Double wins for Nikko Hunt in the U/15 boys hurdles and the long jump with 5m10, William Kennedy in the U/15 boys 100m in 12.1 ansd 200m in 24.1, Sam Boulton in the U/17 mens shot with 11m55 and discus with 38m00.

The Howorth twins took the expected 1st and 2nd places in the U/13 boys 800m with Robert winning in 2.22.1 and John close behind in 2.22.9 with John finishing second in the shot with 5m62.

Ellie Webb moved up an age group to compete inthe hammer and promptly broke the Club record for U/17 women, winning with 30m37.

Several new names among the winners were Rhiannon Bowen winning the U/11 600m from a large field in 2.06.7, Jay Painter winning the U/15 boys 800m in 2.28.6, Katie Geddes won the U/17 w 300m in 42.5, Kirsty Stanley won the U/17 w 1,500m in 5.13.3

To all U20 & U17 athletes:

The National Junior Athletics League (NJAL) is an inter-club team competition for U20 athletes, though U17 athletes can also take part.

As you probably know five of the clubs within the Avon area (Bristol & West, Mendip, North Somerset, Team Bath, and Yate & District) have joined together to form a composite team called Team Avon.

TEAM SELECTION: Rachael Fisher (women) & Sandra Woodman (men) select the team two weeks in advance of the competition so it is vital that you complete the availability form and return it to us with your current PBs for your preferred events.

The top two ranked athletes are selected to score but there is plenty of opportunity to compete as guests as well.

All key information is avaialble on the NJAL section of the website, and in the downloads below, along with an availabilty form:

NJAL 2012

Loren Bleaken has gained selection to represent England at the Celtic Cup at the University of Wales in Cardiff on 29 January.

Loren is to take part in the Medley Relay Leg (600m).

This is a great achievement for Loren and her coach Adrian Clover, and is a reward for Loren’s consistent displays of outstanding performances in 2011.

Along with a very successful XC season, Loren had a very successful track season, where she ranked 4th for the 300m in the U17W age group (and 9th overall).

Her 800m time was enough to put her 2nd overall in the U17W rankings and 33rd overall which is an incredible achievement.

Team Bath wishes Loren, Adrian and the rest of the England team all the best at the Celtic Cup.
